Valerie Tyson Band ~South Florida’s Queen of Soul
“The voice, smooth and sultry. The singer, expressive and refined.”
Recognized as South Florida’s own Queen of Soul, Valerie Tyson is a powerhouse vocalist known for her fiery performances and deep emotional connection with audiences.
Praised by the Sun Sentinel for her ability to “wrap the audience around her finger” and by the Miami Herald for vocals that “threaten to burn the joint down,” Valerie has been lighting up stages for over 30 years.
Born in Hollywood, Florida, she fell in love with music at a young age, shaped by classical training, opera, and soul legends like Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan. A turning point came when she heard Chaka’s “Once You Get Started,” inspiring her to pursue R&B alongside her classical roots.
Her career has included early gigs with The Life Band, Unit Three, and Jimmie “Bo” Horne, as well as performances with bands like Cosmic Truth, After Midnight, and E.J. & Company. She has opened for major acts including Al Green, Janet Jackson, New Edition, Spyro Gyra, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Valerie won the 1992 PACE R&B Showcase with her band O.T.G., leading to a long-standing residency at Mangos with George Tandy. She continues to perform jazz, soul, and R&B classics, celebrating the timeless sounds of Aretha, Gladys, Mavis, and Etta.
In 2015, she was a featured artist at Jazz in the Gardens and released her EP Here I Am. Today, you can catch her every week at Blue Jean Blues in Fort Lauderdale for Throwback Tuesdays, a fan-favorite night of soul and nostalgia.
“It’s a gift from God to move people with your voice,” Valerie says. “I’m grateful to still be doing what I love and to be supported by such amazing fans.”
